A Malawian Christmas

Merry "Malawian" Christmas a few days later!

We kicked off our Christmas week with a party...just because we are in Malawi doesn't mean we don't like to have a good time.  The party was like no other...definetly one of our favorite days so far in Malawi.  We partyed it up with the kids from Samaraitan's Trust.  S.T.  is a home for street children--those that have been rescued from the streets of Blantyre.  Many of them live out on the streets begging for money, food, anything just to get by...many have parents that also live/work on the streets, some as prostitutes.  These children (approx. 50 of them) have been rescued and brought upon their own will and the permission of their parents to Samaritans.  At S.T. they are given a place to sleep, food each day and an opportunity to go to school.  Our friends, Nick, Lindsay and Sarah, have been a part of ministering to the kids there for some time now...and asked us if we would like to come with them for the Christmas party.  Of course!  They had donors from the States that gave money for each child to have a special present and community type presents for everyone.  For the record, I've never heard so much noise and cheering then when those 50 children opened up their Christmas presents all at the same time...I'm pretty sure that most, if not all, have never had a Christmas like that.  It was a precious site...and one that Daniel and I will never let escape from our memory.  We are humbled that we got to start our Christmas week in that very special day.

Later in the week we packed up and headed out of Blantyre city for a few days of R&R on Mt. Mulanje.  Mt. Mulanje is the largest mountain in southern Africa and the second largest on the continent.  We actually rented in a house with 7 others (plus a 3 week old baby) on Lujeri Tea Estate which is located on Mt. Mulanje.  It was a Christmas like no other...warm, heavy rains at times, and every meal we had we ate on the veranda facing a beautiful garden.  The company was amazing too...we went with our friends Kayla and Jonathan along with other friends that we have made since coming in August.  On Christmas day we headed out for a hike through the tea estate...the photos show a little of the sites that we saw that day.

We hope and pray that everyone had a great and safe Christmas with family and friends!  We missed you all!  Click here to see our Christmas pics.

By the way, the landscape looks amazing in the pictures. I'm sure it doesn't compare in real life! Do you wake up in the mornings and just stare at it in awe? I used to do that in Chile.

Wow, I loved reading about the Samaritan children and seeing your pictures. Honestly, I got a little teared up. I know it was an adjustment having Christmas away and in the heat, but I'm glad you all were able to get away with a good group of friends and share it together. Love you guys!!
